What is the Summer Lead Series?

The Summer Lead Series is an annual event held at Urban Jungle that brings together lead climbing enthusiasts for an unforgettable experience. This high-energy competition is designed to challenge climbers of all levels and provide a platform for growth and improvement. Whether you're a seasoned climbing veteran or just starting your climbing journey, the Summer Lead Series offers something for everyone.

To meet demand, we introduced Top-Rope categories in 2023, for youth and those who just got into climbing. For SLS 2024, we are introducing a second Zone in the scoring system to challenge the competitors further.

SLS 2023 Finals

Competition Format and Scoring

The Summer Lead Series consists of four two-week-long rounds, offering plenty of opportunities to showcase your skills. Participants will have the chance to conquer various routes in lead climbing and top-rope climbing categories. You'll earn points throughout the competition by completing or zoning the climbs. The scoring system rewards flash, top, and zones, adding an element of excitement and competitiveness to the event. Each round will have four routes (A, B, C, D).

Categories

The Summer Lead Series caters to climbers of different levels and ages, making it an inclusive and engaging competition. Let's explore the categories available:

Lead Climbing

  • Advanced: For climbers seeking a challenge and aiming to conquer the most difficult routes, showcasing their expertise and determination.

  • Intermediate: Designed for climbers who have honed their skills and are ready to elevate their climbing abilities. This category allows participants to compete against climbers of similar proficiency, fostering growth and healthy competition. The category is for climbers whose max red-point grade is 23 for males and 21 for females.

  • Youth: A special category for young climbers born in 2012 or after, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their talent, passion, and determination in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Top-Rope Climbing

  • Novice: This category is perfect for climbers who are new to the sport or still building confidence. With routes that cater to beginners, it's a great way to get started on the exciting journey of indoor climbing. You should not compete in this category if your max red-point grade is greater than 19.

  • Youth: Young climbers born in 2012 or after can participate in the youth category, where they can learn, grow, and challenge themselves alongside their peers, building a strong foundation for their climbing future.

Scoring System

The Summer Lead Series implements a comprehensive scoring system that rewards climbers for their achievements on each route. Here's how the scoring works:

  • 20 points for Zone #1
  • 30 points for Zone #2
  • 50 points for Top
  • 60 points for Flash

To make things even more thrilling, bonus points are awarded for flashing or topping a route within an active round, with an additional 10 points for this accomplishment. Participants also earn 5 bonus points for reaching a zone within an active round. It's important to note that each climb can only be awarded one score, emphasising the significance of every achievement.

Schedule and Rounds

The Summer Lead Series is a well-structured competition with a clearly defined round schedule. To ensure fairness and equal opportunities, the top-rope categories start and finish a day later than the lead categories, except for the start of the first and finish of the final round, which aligns with the lead.

Round 1

Thu 25 Jan, 5pm -
- Thu 08 Feb, 7pm

Round 2

Thu 08 Feb, 5pm -
- Thu 22 Feb, 7pm

Round 3

Thu 22 Feb, 5pm -

Finals

The top 6 men and women with the highest scores at the end of all four rounds go through to a "World Cup" style finals (Advanced & Intermediate categories only) held on Friday 22nd March from 7 pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Logging the scores is done directly in the gym. Ensure that you update your score as soon as you can to avoid losing possible bonus points.

The scoring can not be done over the phone or retrospectively.

  • Certainly! Always ensure to update your score as you go. If you, for example, reach Zone #1 on the first try and then a week later, after some training and beta tuning, get to the Top in the next go, ensure that you update your score from Zone #1 to Top.

  • Yes, you can continue climbing the routes and score on them until the end of the competition. However, you will not receive the bonus points outside of the round. For instance, if you successfully ‘top’ Route 1B during Round 1, you receive 50 points plus 10 bonus points. If you couldn’t top the same route within Round 1 but topped it after the round ended, you would receive 50 points without any bonus.

  • To keep the competition fair, you won’t be able to compete in the Novice category, as you are not a novice any more, and you won’t be able to compete in the Intermediate or Advanced categories due to the lack of lead skills.

This does have an easy solution, though. Let us introduce you to the world of lead climbing. Book our popular lead course, and we’ll get you there.

It takes time to learn the skills, so don’t leave for too late.

  • That is correct. Anyone wishing to lead climb at Urban Jungle has to pass our in-house lead assessment. Find more details about lead climbing here.

  • Not really; the competition is open to climbers of all ages, including youth categories for climbers born in 2011 or after.

  • Sure you can! You still need to meet the criteria for the chosen category criteria, so this will work only for youth climbers.
